those perceptions about the nra and relatively little information in the early weeks, no information about american attitudes and support for specific policy proposals, and i think in this fast-paced environment of policy deliberations over this issue, it is critical to understand how the public thinks about specific proposals to strengthen gun laws. we live in a democracy. we should care about what our public things, and we should bring the best research methods to bear on identifying the level of support in the public overall but also to understand how support may vary across some groups in our society, so this is what we did. we designed a data collection instrument to determine support for 33 policies among americans overall by gun ownership and stratified by political party identification, and to get gun ownership, most of the survey were is your typical thousand person poll, and it is hard to give precise estimates using an approach for smaller subgroups within opinion polls, so we over sampled gun owners and non gun owners living in households with guns. we have basically the
